According to Allan Mitchell of The Athletic, the Oilers could look at alternative options instead of Kulak this upcoming offseason. They may want to look at younger, cheaper options, and allow for GM Holland to have more cap flexibility to help fill in the team's needs.
Per Mitchell, "Edmonton will want a full-time role for Broberg, who has played in 38 games this season and 61 over his young NHL career. His performance this season was impressive, as he stepped in on the third pair and helped in puck movement and retrieval. Organizations in Edmonton's cap situation must find ways to save money, and Broberg is a natural replacement for Kulak."
Kulak, 29 is signed through the 2025-26 season at $2.75 million AAV. He has tallied two goals, and 19 points through 70 games.
With the offseason coming fast, teams will have more cap space flexibility to work deals. Kulak, while not a bad player, for his salary Holland may be able to find a younger D-man than him in the trade market.
The Oilers did add Mattias Ekholm in a trade with the Nashville Predators, and he has played exceptionally well since coming to Edmonton. He has one goal, six assists in nine games.
He is signed for $6 million a year through the 2025-26 season. There's no indication that he is going anywhere. Kulak is expendable and we shall see how many teams are interested in his services.
The Oilers are winners of seven of their last 10 games and have won three straight. They are peaking at the right time and it must be noticed that they have improved.
While in the last 10 games they have surrendered 34 goals, but have tallied 44 goals. Now, that is not ideal, and it is hoped that they can tighten up on the defensive side of the puck as the playoffs approach.
