The Edmonton Oilers announced yesterday that Brandon Sutter had been released from his PTO.

Despite two long years off the ice, Ken Holland and Sutter themselves hoped he could demonstrate the same level of skill he displayed earlier in his career.

Brandon Sutter called a meeting Sunday in Seattle with Oilers GM Ken Holland, head coach Jay Woodcroft and trainer TD Forss, to tell them he could not go on with his PTO.
Holland: "He had some health concerns and he just felt that he was going to end his career."
Long Covid...

As part of his PTO, he would compete with Sam Gagner and other players for a 4th line center spot. However, upon release from his PTO, he also announced his retirement.

Hockey Insider Mark Spector revealed that on Sunday Sutter met up with Ken Holland, Jay Woodcroft, and trainer TD Forss and told them he couldn't continue his PTO.

However, it appears Sutter had some health concerns that prevented him from pursuing his goal of returning to the league permanently.
