Alex Formenton, one of the five players charged with assault in the 2018 Team Canada World Juniors scandal, has retired from hockey at just 24 years old.

The charges are in response to an alleged crime that involved Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, and Cal Foote in a hotel room after a Hockey Canada event in London, Ontario. Formenton turned himself into police, and intends to plead not guilty along with the rest of the players. A trial for the five players is set to begin in September of 2025.

Some of the other players named have begun playing in the KHL, but Alex Formenton has given up on professional hockey. Court records say Formenton is now working in construction, and resides in his hometown of Barrie, Ontario.

Formenton was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the 2017 Draft, and was a promising young player before this incident came to light. In 109 career NHL games, Formenton only scored 23 goals and 39 points. He played two seasons in the Swiss-A league before deciding to call it quits on his career.
