According to Dreger and Johnston, the Penguins are in the late stages of taking final offers for Guentzel. The return for the trade is expected to be a first round draft pick, young NHL player, and prospects. At this time, several teams are in still in the mix and could make a final push to acquire Guentzel, including the Edmonton Oilers.
A few weeks ago, the Penguins allowed Guentzel's camp to begin reaching out to field contract extension offers from potential suitors in trade, but no team showed much interest in an extension. That means Guentzel will be health primarily as a rental, which will drive down the price of acquisition and could keep the Oilers in the mix. As well as the Oilers, the Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, and Carolina Hurricanes have all been linked to Guentzel, with the Knights being the favourites to land him.
Guentzel was the Oilers primary target in trade heading into the deadline, but the lack of extension interest drove the team to look elsewhere for a trade. Because of that, it would certainly make sense to see the Oilers circle back here and make a final offer for Guentzel - we'll just have to wait and see.
