Vincent Desharnais has often been a healthy scratch this season, and reporters recently surfaced that the Canucks are looking to move on from him already.
Now, Oilers reporter Jim Matheson is saying the Canucks could be targeting Marcus Pettersson due to Presidents Jim Rutherford's familiarity with him, with Vincent Desharnais and Nils Hoglander in return.
In addition, Matheson referenced the reports from Frank Seravalli that the Canucks could be pushing to make a trade before the NHL's holiday roster freeze.
Things have gone bad quickly for Vincent Desharnais with the Canucks, which is very unfortunate for him.
He was signed to a two year deal for $4M, but after just 19 games, the Canucks don't see him as an NHL option - and not many teams are interested in him either.
Marcus Pettersson is a 28 year old left shot defenceman with the Penguins who plays a strong two way game, and is under contract for the remainder of this season at $4.025M.
Earlier this year, the Oilers were linked to acquiring Pettersson and he still seems to be a good fit, but as of now the Oilers top target seems to be Mike Matheson of the Montreal Canadiens.
The NHL's roster freeze takes effect tonight at midnight, but even if this deadline doesn't force a trade, teams can lay the framework for deal to be made later.
