At Blue Jackets practice today, coach Dean Evason and the team invited Guy Gaudreau, the father of the Gaudreau brother, to partake as a coach. Evason said afterwards that Guy will be welcome to skate with the team anytime he wants, and Guy followed the offer up by asking to come back tomorrow.
Evason noted that Gaudreau came with a positive attitude and willing to contribute in any way. Given Guy's history as a coach, he was able to step into drills immediately, and Evason said it could only be a positive experience for the players.
It seems like an incredible experience for the father after an unthinkable tragedy, and a way to keep him in the hockey work and keep the memory of the brothers alive.
Guy Gaudreau, a native of Philadelphia, also made an appearance at Flyers training camp with John Tortorella. The revered Flyers coach said it was a therapeutic experience for players and Gaudreau to come together over hockey, and mentioned how impressed he was with Guy's coaching.
It would be incredible to see Guy Gaudreau have a new role with Columbus, as it could bring some healing to the players and the family affected by the brothers' tragic passing. The NHL will continue to honour the Gaudreau brothers throughout the season with memorials, but a direct offer reconnect Guy Gaudreau to the game of hockey is just such a touching gesture.
