This story has brought out discussions amongst former NHL players an NHL pundits on whether this is the right move at this time. During an episode of the Missing Curfew podcast, former NHL players Scotty Upshall and Shane O'Brien weighed in on the idea of making Bedard captain.
The Edmonton Oilers made Connor McDavid their captain back on October 5th 2016. At the time, McDavid was 19 years and 266 days old who is only 20 days older than Gabriel Landeskog who became the Colorado Avalanche captain. If bedard becomes captain of the Blackhawks, he would certainly become the youngest captain in NHL history as his birthday falls on July 17th.
Bedard has had an almost celebrity introduction to the NHL as his first year was quite eventful. With a cross-continent tour to start the season, a debunked scandal with former Blackhawks forward Corey Perry then to break his jaw after the new year and then winning the Calder trophy.
There have been rumblings that the Blackhawks may award the captaincy to Nick Foligno, but it seems to be likely that Bedard will get the captaincy as he is the face of the team and will become the face of the NHL within the next few seasons.
