McDavid himself was just on the opposite end of a dirty play, after Adrian Kempe was fined for a slewfoot on the Oilers star.
Skating right by Johansson who was no where close to making a play, McDavid stuck out his elbow to hit Johansson in the head. Unbelievably, there was no penalty called.
The contact looked fair light, but the Minnesota Wild forward was forced from the game with injury, and did not return.
Oilers analyst Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Athletic believes McDavid will receive at least a $5,000 fine for the hit. The fact Johansson was injured doesn't help his case.
Given the fact that McDavid initiated an avoidable contact to the head of the opponent that resulted in an injury, it's possible McDavid could even be suspended for one game.
Sure enough, some Minnesota Wild fans are calling for a suspension for McDavid.
A suspension may be harsh for a player with little history and light contact, so a fine would seem more appropriate.
Other than this one blemish of a hit, Connor McDavid had a dominant performance in Edmonton's win over Minnesota. The captain recorded 2 goals and an assist, including yet another highlight reel play.
Hopefully McDavid won't be suspended for the Oilers sake, but it could be on the table, especially if NHL Player Safety wants to make an example.
