Kuznetsov was heading into the final year of an eight year contract he signed with the Washington Capitals for $7.8M each season. After 11 seasons with the Capitals, Kuznetsov was traded to the Hurricanes at the trade deadline for a third round draft pick. He was productive in the Hurricanes playoff run, but was still in and out of the lineup, barely holding on to his NHL spot.
He showed flashes of being an offensive star early in his career, and was instrumental in the Capitals Stanley Cup victory, but Kuznetsov began to fizzle out in the years following the championship. Last season he scored only 8 goals in 63 games, which just isn't good enough for $7.8M in salary. In addition, he had some off-ice issues in recent years, being suspended in 2019 for an off-ice incident and entering the Player Assistance program in February 2024.
Fans will remember Kuznetsov for his flashy offensive style, his chemistry with Alexander Ovechkin in their Stanley Cup year, and of course his eagle-style celebration. We here at OilersDaily wish all the best for Kuznetsov in the next chapter of his career.
