According to a new report from TSN's Salim Valji, the Flames and Pelletier are still not close on a contract extension, and talks have become quiet. Training camp begins on September 19th for the Calgary Flames, so they'll need a resolution quickly or else Pelletier will be sitting out.
In the past, Pelletier has expressed some frustration about his lack of opportunity with the Calgary Flames, and he was treated particularly weirdly by former coach Darryl Sutter. It's possible there's some fundamental disagreements blocking this contract, and the Flames could explore other options.
Pelletier is now 23 years old, and was selected by the Flames in the first round of the 2019 Draft. He's scored at a prolific rate in Junior and lit up the AHL for a near point per game pace over three separate seasons, but hasn't seen much playing time with the Flames. In 37 NHL games, Pelletier has only scored 4 goals and 10 points, and was given minimal opportunity.
Analyst Kevin Pappetti of the Athletic recently suggested the Flames could trade Jakob Pelletier for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson. The trade would be a one for one swap of two young players who seem unhappy in their organization, and once were highly regarded prospects. With training camp fast approaching and Pelletier sitting on the sidelines, the Flames will be forced to make a move soon.
