Former Oilers fan favourite Sam Gagner has officially signed a tryout contract with the AHL's Belleville Senators in another attempt to continue his playing career.

Gagner last player in the NHL for the Oilers last season, and was cut from a tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes this season.

Sam Gagner Not Done Yet: Signs Another AHL Deal to Continue Career

The Belleville Senators, released this morning that Gagner has signed with the team. He's already joined the team, and is expected to get into the lineup for tonight's game on Ottawa's AHL team.

Gagner just got back from playing on Team Canada at the Spengler Cup after not playing for any team in the first half of the season. He must've impressed with his Spengler Cup performance, proving he's still a professional level talent.

Could Gagner earn another NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators?

It's hard to imagine Gagner working his way back to the NHL, but the Ottawa Senators could perhaps use an offensive option in their bottom six. Maybe if Gagner proves himself in the AHL, he gets one more stretch run at the playoffs.

Now 35 years old, Gagner has come a long way since being drafted by the Oilers 6th overall back in 2007. Gagner's played 1043 career NHL games with 7 different teams, including 3 different stints with the Oilers.

Although he never reached the offensive success heights expected of a top 10 pick, Gagner was always a skilled player that founds ways to produce, and always gave 100% effort. He fully embraced the city of Edmonton, and fans love him for it.

Hopefully Gagner can prove his skill on the Senators AHL team, and perhaps earn one more call up to push with the young Sens for the playoffs. They may be able to use a veteran leader like him in their bottom six locker room.
