The Detroit News revealed that former Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser has sued HCC life insurance company for a sum of $680,000.

The primary reason is due to disability payments as the lawsuit stated on Monday that there was «a breach of the terms of professional hockey players occupational specific and sports disability insurance contract.»

"The purpose of this case is to compel Defendant HCC Life Insurance Company to provide certain long-term disability benefits in the amounts and at the coverage levels promised, as well as for an accounting, and an award of attorney fees and costs incurred as a consequence of Defendant's failure to do so," the lawsuit said.

Dekeyser has not played in the NHL since 2022 after he experienced severe discomfort in his foot, leg and then lower back. This health trouble led to back surgery in December of 2019 but prolonged and continued the trouble he faced.
All these injury troubles did not warrant the Red Wings to re signing him.

In the fall of 2022, he tried to come back to hockey but according to the lawsuit it stated,

"owing to the functional restrictions and limitations stemming from his lower back injuries and worsening medical condition, he was unable to return to playing professional hockey».

Dekeyser had a 10-year career all with the Detroit Red Wings which began in 2012 and ended in 2022. The six foot 183 LB defenceman was undrafted, and he had played 547 games, scoring 33 goals with 113 assists for 146 points and was a + 4 with 266 penalty minutes. He was the primary defenseman in the Red Wings top 4 pairings.

He has now taken up the profession of real estate agent in Macomb County.
