Jake DeBrusk had a somewhat tumultuous time with the Boston Bruins over his 465 game career before signing with the Canucks, even requesting a trade twice.

On a new episode of the Cam and Strick Podcast, DeBrusk explained why requested a trade off the Bruins

»I asked for one in the summer. Just the kind of way the team is shaping up, when it came to where I was looking where I could possible play in the lineup. And kind of how the year ended, you know I was scratched in the playoffs. I just thought it was time for a fresh start for both sides.»

DeBrusk went on to say that the situation became very mentally draining on him, trying to perform through the trade request, dealing with the media, and even playing just to continue his own career. He credited his teammates for keeping him in the fold and as a valued member of the team to keep himself engaged and playing his best.

The Edmonton native forward was heavily connected to signing with the Oilers in free agency before picking the Canucks and their offer of $5.5M for 7 years. Now 27 years old, DeBrusk has neared 30 goals multiple times in his career, but has never produced consistently - and has only scored 50 points once. The Oilers may have been better off to pivot and sign Arvidsson and Skinner instead.

The Canucks lost a few significant rental additions with Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov to Boston, but DeBrusk playing with more opportunity and at his full potential should make the Canucks a better team next year. They've already made the second round of the playoffs under coach Tocchet, and they'll be looking to go a lot further - but they'll have to get past the Oilers.
