According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Pittsburgh Penguins will soon announce an extension for Sidney Crosby, but it will come with a plan to win now - including bold trades'. Crosby will reportedly be signing for 3 years at $10M a year.
The 36 year old Crosby wants to be a legacy player, and remain with the Penguins for his entire career - but he also wants to win, and Pittsburgh doesn't look close. They've missed the playoffs for two straight seasons now, and made no offseason moves that would inspire confidence in them making it this year. Crosby's still far and away the best player on the team, scoring 42 goals and 94 points last season.
Now that they're officially re-signing Crosby, Kyle Dubas and the Penguins need to make aggressive trades to make themselves a playoff contender again. It's fine not to make another Cup run honestly, but to be in the basement of the league and waste Crosby's final years would be awful for hockey fans to see. It's not abundantly clear who exactly the Penguins could trade for to make it all better, but Dubas better figure it out. The whole hockey world is rooting to see Crosby in the playoffs at least one more time.
