The decision hardly comes as a shock, as the Sharks were an abysmal team this season. Even by standards or a rebuilding team that's offloading their assets, the Sharks struggled to even compete in games. Their low points game with two losing streaks of over 12 games this year, and the truly embarrassing efforts honestly justify the firing of Quinn, despite the fact the losing record wasn't his fault. Just three days ago, GM Mike Grier said he was still evaluating Quinn as a head coach. It's clear now, he was just biding time with the comment before firing him.
The Sharks finished dead last in the standings this year with a horrendous record of 19-54-9. Their goal differential of -150 was by far the worst in the entire league. Any way you judge it, someone in the organization has to pay a price for a season this awful.
Now the pressure will shift to GM Mike Grier to make meaningful moves towards improving this roster long term. The Sharks used to be a force in the pacific division for years, and in their current state, they could develop some long-standing problems by letting down their fanbase. Hopefully the firing of Quinn is the first step towards change in San Jose.
