Vancouver bans the phrase of Go Canucks Go
Sometimes politics just goes too far, and this case is simply ridiculous. The Vancouver Canucks are the hottest thing in the city for their first playoff appearance in years, and now the city has banned the phrase of Go Canucks Go.'
On public transit in Vancouver, the message boards strangely read Go Team Go' instead. Reporter Rob Williams reached out to TransLink to find out why, and the provided the laughable reason that Go Canucks Go isn't inclusive.
»In a phone conversation with Daily Hive, a TransLink spokesperson explained that each bus can be programmed with only a limited amount of messages, and that «go Canucks go» wasn't «inclusive» enough.
This decision was apparently made years ago.»
-Rob Williams, Daily Hive
In the past, the city buses had always used the Canucks team name, as well as other local sports teams. It feels so strange, cowardly, and disassociated to not use the team name, but it seems part of a larger Vancouver city strategy.
The Canucks are also the only Canadian team in the NHL that isn't hosting an official watch party outside their arena for their fans. Vancouver Mayor Kevin Sim referenced their past of riots after playoff losses, and explained that he essentially doesn't trust fans to behave responsibly together.
It's an absolutely shameless look for Vancouver for both events, and it feels so out of touch for what the people of the city care about - the Canucks. The city and team has to do a whole lot better, or they'll risk alienating their fans significantly.
