The 27 year old Sprong has been a reliable offensive producer when he's been healthy and getting consistent playing time, scoring 21 goals in 66 games with the Kraken in 2022-23. Last season was slightly down, scoring only 18 goals, but he had a limited role with the Detroit Red Wings. Already an NHL journeyman, Sprong has played for 5 teams since being drafted in the second round by the Penguins in 2015.
Sprong's last contract was a bargain at just $2M for one year, and he should be able to earn a significant raise after proving his worth the last two seasons. Surprisingly he hasn't been signed yet, which could indicate he overestimated his value, but Dhaliwal also reported that several teams are very interested in Sprong, still trying to make something work. After bouncing around the league for his whole career, Sprong is likely looking for a contract with term.
The Canucks have quality depth players, but many are playing high up in the lineup, and Daniel Sprong could be a valuable insurance policy there. His offensive abilities could see him slot into the top six, where Danton Heinen and Nils Hoglander are projected to play. Sprong looks like he could be a seamless fit in Vancouver, but they may have to pay up to pry him away from signing with another team.
