After making the playoffs for the first time in nine years and playing their first two games at home, the Canucks strangely didn't organize an outdoor watch party. Today, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim explained his part in the lack of watch parties for the Canucks.
At a press conference today, Sim explained that he simply doesn't trust fans to behave responsibly during an organized outdoor event, referring the riots and unrest that has occurred in the past when the Canucks have been eliminated.
As fans of their rival team in the Edmonton Oilers, it's kind of hilarious to see that Canucks fans' antics in the past have robbed them of fully enjoying playoff hockey like the rest of Canadian fanbases do. At the same time, this decision from Sim truly is ridiculous and extremely paternalistic from a Mayor, and honestly, fans may organize anyway.
The Oilers outdoor watch party at Rogers Place nicknamed the Moss Pit has been an incredible success for several years now - and is one of the most fun places to watch an Oilers game. Still, a small minority of people have disrupted the good times in the Moss Pit with a few fights, which is exactly the thing Vancouver is trying to avoid.
If the Canucks are able to string together a few series wins, the mayor may have to relent and find a way to capitalize on the excitement in the city.
