As a temporary solution, NHL Reporter Jim Matheson came up with a trade proposal.
In Matheson's proposal, the Oilers and Detroit Red Wings would be trade partners, as he proposes trading Campbell packaged with assets to the Red Wings to solve the Jack Campbell issue. The Oilers would receive veteran goaltender James Reimer in return.
The proposal is interesting, but Yzerman has to eat Campbell's $5 Million salary, so it's going to be hard to sell. According to Matheson, the deal would require multiple, if not several sweeteners.
It is highly unattractive to the Yzerplan to have Campbell's contract on the books for another three years after that.
The Oilers would have to give up more assets than they'd like to sell Campbell in order for this trade to work.
With a 2.30 GAA and .917 save percentage this season, Reimer has proven to be a solid goaltender, but he won't be the team's white knight.
Multiple- 1st round picks would also be out of the question with such a buy-in.
It seems unlikely that either team makes it happen, as there's too much collateral damage on each side.
