Markstrom had reportedly waived his no-move-clause to join the Devils at the 2024 Trade Deadline. The deal fell apart on the Flames end, and Markstrom had to play out the season on a losing Calgary team.
The 34 year old starting goaltender has reportedly wanted out of Calgary since the team began its roster retool. The relationship between Markstrom and the Flames became obviously rocky, making a trade likely the only route forward for the team.
By acquiring Markstrom, the New Jersey Devils fill the biggest roster hole over the last few seasons, and could now be a serious playoff threat. Markstrom is still considered one of the league's most reliable starting goaltenders, frequently starting up to 60 games a season. Last year in 48 games, Markstrom posted a league average .905 save percentage. That's all the Devils will need.
