Markstrom has been in Calgary since coming over from Vancouver in 2020. He has had a very personally successful career in Calgary, despite a lack of team success. Markstrom has been playing very well this season with a .916 sv% and a 2.5 GAA, and Calgary might trade him to capitalize on his high value before he ends up somewhere else in free agency anyway. It seems like Markstrom knows his days in Calgary are numbered, and with a display tonight it seems like he may be on his way out sooner than later.
This may also be the best option for Markstrom, as he will want to lead a team on a deep playoff run. The Devils are dead last in save percentage across the team in the league, which is a stat the team would be happy to bolster with a hot starter like Markstrom. If all of this is true and Markstrom is ready to leave Calgary, it definitely makes one team a lot more interesting.
