On his first and only shift of the game, McDavid fell down awkwardly into the boards and slid down into the corner. He was able to get up on his own, and skated back to the bench, but McDavid was unable to return to the game. Upon closer look, McDavid's ankle was jammed into the boards with force, causing major concerns for the Oilers.
After the game tonight, head coach Kris Knoblauch didn't have a great update for Oilers fans. McDavid will be leaving the team's road trip to return to Edmonton for medical tests, so he'll miss at least the next two games.
On the television broadcast tonight, Oilers insider Bob Stauffer mentioned that the injury may be a high ankle sprain. Those types of injuries can vary significantly from Grade 1 to Grade 3, missing anywhere from one week to several months. It will all depend on if there is any structural damage to McDavid's ankle, which will be determined by the Oilers tests in the next few days.
Anytime the Oilers are without the best player in hockey, their team is knocked down by quite a bit. They haven't got off to the best start either this year, so if McDavid is out for any length of time, the Oilers will be looking to Leon Draisaitl and the rest of the team to step up and keep them in a playoff position.
Not only is it bad for the Oilers when McDavid is out, it's simply bad for hockey. The Oilers captain is only 8 points away from his 1000th career point, and being one of the fastest players in NHL history to achieve it. Hopefully the Oilers receive the best possible news from medical tests, and it's just a week long injury for McDavid.
