Now, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed exactly why McDavid didn't return to the ice for the trophy. McDavid had agreed to come out and accept it, but after addressing his teammates in the locker room, the moment was too emotional and he didn't want to leave.
Some fans were critical of McDavid for not coming out to accept the Trophy, including JS Giguere, the last player to win the award on a losing team in 2003. Giguere went after McDavid, saying it was a disrespectful to not accept the award. Despite the fact he didn't come out to accept the award, the even moved quickly and thankfully, Bettman was off the ice faster.
Losing the Stanley Cup Final Game 7 would be an absolutely devastating moment for any team, and it was especially for the Oilers. It was a long time coming for the superstar core of this team, and this year's depth was better than ever before. They gave their best shot and came up just short of a miracle comeback, and the team was rightfully heartbroken. McDavid was right to stay with his team and show his loyalty to them, not to the individual accolade of the Conn Smythe.
With everything the Oilers have shown this year, there's no question they'll be back with another long run in the playoffs, and hopefully a Stanley Cup win. Their superstars have matured into great leaders and playoff players, and the management knows the team is knocking on the door of a championship. With the right moves this offseason the Oilers will be back next year even better, and McDavid can accept the Conn Smythe in person after a Cup win.
