On the Oilers away jersey, a Karbon-X patch will appear in the same location as the advertisement on the home jersey. Karbon-X is a business service aimed at reducing carbon emissions for environmentalism.
To begin this year, the Edmonton Oilers announced that the team would include Play Alberta patches on the team's home jerseys. Play Alberta is the only legal gambling commission in Alberta, also sponsoring the Calgary Flames jerseys.
Plenty of Oilers fans and hockey fans in general aren't happy with these advertisements gracing iconic jerseys. The entire rest of the NHL experience is inundated with advertisements, from the boards to the broadcast, and adding another to the jersey that fans wear just feels a step too far. At the end of the day, it's a disappointment for fans, but a reality that NHL teams are trying to make money everywhere they can.
The Oilers ownership did spark some outrage though when the team was found to be charging an extra fee for the advertisement patch on the home jersey. Fans obviously want to wear exactly what the players are wearing, but paying extra to be a walking advertisement feels like total lunacy.
Advertising on jerseys obviously isn't great for fans, but with its involvement in other sports, it's inevitable it would come to hockey. Hopefully advertisements don't become central to hockey jerseys like soccer is, and hopefully the Oilers fans are at least rewarded with a Stanley Cup. The Oilers are back in action tomorrow night against the Red Wings.
