Right now, the Oilers are 4-0-0 on the season whenever there's a fight in the game. Today's fisticuffs came from Corey Perry dropping the gloves with Joe Veleno when the Oilers were down by a goal, and it clearly ignited the team.
In fact, every time the Oilers fight it seems to ignore the team - it's shown by their perfect record! Troy Stecher started it this season with his fight against Flyers Captain Sean Couturier. Darnell Nurse followed it up the next game with a fight against Michael McCarron in the Oilers win over the Nashville Predators. Again, Nurse was the one to drop the gloves in the win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and tonight it was Corey Perry. In all of the Oilers losses so far, there hasn't been a fight.
The Oilers don't have many players on the team really known for their fighting ability, but it seems to be a group of guys that really respond well to the physicality. Aside from the fighters already listed, there's a few other Oilers who could get in on the fight parade: Vasili Podkolzin, Mattias Janmark, even Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins have dropped the gloves.
For now it's obviously just a fun coincidence that the Oilers are undefeated every time they fight, but hey, if it's a trend that continues, why not bring in an enforcer to play somewhere in the bottom six. Perhaps it's a way for Josh Brown to find his way back to the NHL roster. As long as the trend keeps up, the Oilers should just keep dropping the gloves!
