The game was well out of reach and the Oilers had stopped celebrating, but the mood changed when Connor finally got his 100th assist. Hyman forced McDavid to go celebrate with the bench, the arena rained down MVP chants, and while back on the bench, Draisaitl must've said something that got to the usually serious McDavid. Even announcer Louie DeBrusk noticed the unusually happy McDavid on the bench.
After the game, McDavid snapped back to his reserved and extremely humble self. In an interview with Gene Principe, McDavid recounted true amazement of joining the legendary 100 assist club, only with Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Bobby Orr.
It was a night to remember for McDavid and all Oilers fans. Heading into the playoffs now with nearly every individual achievement possible, McDavid and the Oilers clearly have their sights set on the Stanley Cup and nothing else. Still, when McDavid got home after the game, he got some more support from his fiancee Lauren Kyle making an awesome cake to celebrate.
This Oilers group has now accomplished everything possible except the ultimate goal of the Stanley Cup. Their group feels more complete than ever this season, and with another extremely successful regular season behind them, they're fully primed for a long run at the Cup.
