Quietly this morning, the Edmonton Oilers officially parted ways with video coach and analytics coordinator Mike Fanelli, and announced Erik Elenz as the replacement.

Elenz is only 23 years old, and is considered an up-and-coming talent in the analytics side of hockey. Elenz worked with the Seattle Kraken's AHL affiliate as a video coach and analytics figure and the University of Vermont hockey team all while in school. He's received commendations for even writing code himself to better apply hockey analytics.

On the other hand, Fanelli has had experience with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and is expected to land with another NHL coaching staff next season.

It's surely a minor move for the Edmonton Oilers, but shows that Jeff Jackson is tapped in to emerging people in the hockey industry. Bringing in someone like Elenz this early in his career, with an already unbelievable resume, looks like a very adept hire by the Edmonton Oilers. Jackson has mentioned before that the Oilers were a step behind in the analytics department, and this hire may be the first to start making changes. Jeff Jackson is bringing in a new era of Oilers executives with his full autonomy this summer.
