Oilers Send Down Forward to AHL, Getting out of Small Salary Cap Penalty
The Edmonton Oilers announced moments ago that they've sent down forward Roby Jarventie to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
Jarventie arrived in the Edmonton Oilers organization with an injury this summer, which forced him to remain on the NHL roster. This meant that the Oilers had to spend $107K on the Season Opening Injured Reserve, which very briefly ate into their capacity for daily accrued cap space.
Now that Jarventie is healthy and re-assigned to the AHL, that salary penalty is now gone. According to PuckPedia, that gives the Oilers $1.15M of cap space right now, which will grow to $5.25M of cap space by the trade deadline if the Oilers run the same player budget until then.
The Oilers acquired Jarventie in a trade this offseason from the Ottawa Senators, sending over only Xavier Bourgault in return. Bourgault had been a prospect whose stock was declining, and Jarventie is a slightly older prospect with a history of success in the AHL.
Jarventie's dealt with significant injury concerns in the last few years, but when playing, has been a prolific scorer. In 22 AHL games last year, he scored 9 goals and 20 points. In many ways, Jarventie is very similar to former prospect Raphael Lavoie. Some fans even wondered if Jarventie could get a shot with the Oilers this year as a bottom-six scoring forward.
It's great news that Jarventie is now healthy and will be back to playing games in the AHL in the coming days. He could be an under the radar prospect for Edmonton if his game pans out well, so he'll be a player for Oilers fans to track throughout this upcoming year.
