It would not be unprecedented for Jackson to retain the title of GM for an extended period of time, like Kyle Dubas has with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Even if the team does hire a GM, many fans are hoping it's just for day-to-day activities, while Jackson handles player acquisitions.
After such a successful first day on the job in free agency, Jackson has given Oilers fans plenty reason to believe in him to manage the future of the team. With prior experience as a player agent, he was able to convince multiple free agents to sign with Edmonton below market value, and finally acquired solid wingers for Leon Draisaitl.
Still, Jackson has stressed that he is currently uncomfortable in the role of General Manager, and would like to hire one as biggest priority this offseason. Ironically enough just like coach Paul Coffey, he's excelling in a role he didn't want - it always seems like the best leaders are unwilling.
No matter who the next General Manager is, Oilers fans can be confident that Jeff Jackson will be making the right decisions while watching over this team. If his first day was any indication, the Oilers will be aggressive in making their team better under Jackson's tenure. They're clearly shooting to get back to the Cup Final and win next year.
