Obviously, people were unsure what to expect from Jay Woodcroft when he took over as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, but we already knew that he was successful in the American Hockey League.

On the other hand, his resume is a laundry list of conferences and leagues he has won titles in, with 511 regular season victories, five western conference titles, six division titles, three presidents trophies, and a Stanley Cup title to his name.

The Oilers are back to the 1-1-3 thank god. They used it when Woodcroft first arrived and then abandoned it last season. The LA Kings and Golden Knights worn down the Oilers with this strategy last season. This is gonna be a welcome change for our D core.

In order to continue winning games, Woodcroft has reverted the team to its defensive style of 1-1-3 in order to implement his winning methods. The LA Kings and Knights used and abused this style in the playoffs last season vs the Oilers.

Using this neutral zone trap, you will be able to shore up your defensive core, create offense, and clog up the ice, all of which will include forcing attackers into either of two sides of the walls.

In addition, to provide you with further context, this system was utilized successfully by the Washington Capitals in order to win a Stanley Cup.

The game of trap hockey is often considered boring, but it is an excellent defensive method that will allow the Oilers to keep the puck out of their nets.
