The Edmonton Oilers had a difficult scenario when they learned that starter Stuart Skinner had been diagnosed with a nonCOVID illness before the game started, leaving them without a backup goaltender. When the Edmonton Oilers called, one of their "EBUGs"emergency backup goalies it was Matt Berlin, who was in the middle of preparing for his university's midterm exams at the time.
It was a dream come true for Berlin to be born and raised in Edmonton and to be able to throw on the Oilers sweater. With just a few minutes remaining in regulation and the Edmonton Oilers leading the Chicago Blackhawks 7-3, head coach Jay Woodcroft said his players advised him to put the goaltender in net to experience playing in the NHL.
Even while it was a fantastic moment for Oilers fans, Blackhawks supporters and playersmay have seen it differently. Imagine a team in the NHL losing so much that they say, "Hey, why don't we toss this university kid in goal for fun?" After realizing that it could have been disrespectful to the Blackhawks, Connor McDavid addressed it in the interview that is seen below:
All class from captain Connor, you love to see it!
