A recent Instagram post from HockeyforeverHQ revealed former Rangers enforcer Sean Avery had purchased an illegal product with his first paycheck from the NHL.

The Instagram profile has a new series that they're putting together called first paycheck. Avery was asked on what he had purchased with his first check from the league and in his typical brutally honest fashion, he revealed that he had purchased an ounce of mushrooms.

Sean Avery had dominated the NHL news cycle for several years during his time as a player. He was well known by fans of posting comments against other players, sometimes quite derogatory which led to controversy throughout the league and in media. Beside his comments, his antics had led to a rule that was installed in the NHL known as the Avery Rule.

During a game between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers, he turned his back to the play and began to wave his hands and look straight at former devils goaltender Martin Brodeur which led to a power play goal after distracting him. Any player now that commits this infraction will face a penalty.

Avery is now 44 years old and was undrafted when he was signed by the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent in 1999. His career spanned till 2012 where he had played with several NHL organizations including the Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and the Dallas Stars.

Knowing that he bought an illegal substance with his first paycheck from the NHL certainly does not surprise most fans as Avery will always go down as one of the most controversial players in league history.
