The Edmonton-born and former Oiler Tyler Ennis carved out a fantastic NHL career for himself, but recently announced his official retirement after two seasons in Europe.

After just seven games with the DEL's Mannheim Eagles in Germany, Ennis decided to call it a career. In a recent interview with the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast, Ennis described a freak neck injury sustained from a big hit and losing his ability to raise the puck as reasons for his retirement.

»I went full Rey Mysterio. I basically jumped and did a crazy choke slam move, but I got the worst of it. And I ended up in a neck brace. I realized I can't be doing Rey Mysterio moves in Germany when I'm 34.

I was in Germany, and I was like, I haven't raised the puck in four games. Every time I shoot it, I'm just whipping it along the ice. I'm like, 'I'm done.'"

Unfortunately there's no video of the Mysterio-esque hit from Ennis, but it's hilarious to even imagine him trying anything like that, especially at 34 years old in Germany. Even his attitude towards raising the puck being a measure of success is so simple it's hilarious. It's not hard to see why he was loved by so many NHL fans.

Ennis speaks with great amount of humility and humour surrounding his very respectable NHL career. He was instantly likeable as an underdog to cheer for due to his smaller stature at 5'9», and had undeniable offensive skill in his prime. During his best years with the Buffalo Sabres, Ennis was regularly scoring 20 goals and nearing 50 points.

He went on to have a journeyman end to his career, playing games with the Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and the Ottawa Senators. In total, Ennis played 700 career NHL games and scored 346 points - a very respectable scoring clip.
