It's a massive shift in the leadership for the Toronto Maple Leafs, especially taking the captaincy away from a veteran like John Tavares. Dreger is reporting that Tavares has been fully on board and supports the change.
Auston Matthews has evolved into an elite two way player in recent seasons, scoring north of 60 goals and also receiving Selke votes. Signed to another contract extension as well, he's clearly the face of the Maple Leafs moving forward, and this captaincy change will make that official. When he takes over the C' in the next few weeks, it'll mark a new era for the Maple Leafs.
After so many years of playoff failure without changing the roster at all, perhaps this is an adjustment that will jolt the team, along with the hiring of Craig Berube as head coach. In GM Brad Treliving's second season with the team, now he's truly beginning to pit his stamp on the roster.
