Moments ago, NHL insiders confirmed that Team Canada defenceman Cale Makar will not be able to play tonight's game against Team USA due to illness.

Canada had flown in Dallas Stars defenceman Thomas Harley to the tournament after Shea Theodore exited with injury, and now losing Makar as well, Harley will enter the lineup without practicing with the team.

Thomas Harley joins Team Canada lineup as Cale Makar is ruled out will illness

Before tonight's game against their biggest rival in the tournament, Team Canada losing arguably their best defenceman is a major blow to their team and chances against the USA.

Team Canada has now lost Cale Makar, Alex Pietrangelo, and Shea Theodore for tonight's criticism game against the USA. Canada's roster was already looking evenly matched against USA, and now the loss of Makar will sting even more.

Cale Makar confirmed out with illness, other players could be sick too

If Makar is dealing with illness too, it's very likely that multiple other players are as well - even on other teams in the tournament. Illnesses move their way through locker rooms quickly and can really affect a team's performance. Earlier today, Sweden pulled goalie Filip Gustavsson due to illness.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have also been dealing with an illness for weeks before the tournament. Hopefully for tonight's game now, he's fully recovered and ready to go - but there are surely other sick Canadian teammates.

Puck drops between Team Canada and the USA at 6:00MT in Montreal. After this game, the tournament will shift to Boston for the final games.
