Oilers top prospect Matthew Savoie has lit up the AHL this season, and now insiders have confirmed that he will be called up to the NHL for an evaluation before the trade deadline.

Savoie and Derek Ryan both joined Oilers practice today despite a lack of an official roster transaction, and now it's expected at least Savoie will stay with the team.

Now according to a new report from Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Athletic, Matthew Savoie will be called up for the team's upcoming road trip as management wants to evaluate him before the trade deadline - which is only 7 games away.
Savoie hasn't been officially recalled, but he will be soon. The plan is for him to join the team on the upcoming road trip. His Oilers debut is TBD, but members of the org. want to see him in game action.

Savoie will have 7 games to show the Edmonton Oilers if he can be a roster option later this season and in the playoffs, or potentially take hold of a roster spot now and not let go.

Oilers top prospect Matthew Savoie being added to roster before trade deadline

Matthew Savoie was a 9th overall draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2022, and the Oilers dealt for him this offseason after his prospect stock took a hit. With a full steady year in the Oilers system, Savoie's prospect stock has skyrocketed back to being a potential NHL star.
The 21 year old right shot centreman from St. Albert is a slick offensive player which could pair perfectly with the Oilers top six.
Savoie has speed, a smooth passing ability, and great hockey sense which are perfect characteristics for playing alongside elite players - and he's also got elite hands and finishing ability. Oilers prospect analyst Bruce Curlock has noted Savoie's defensive game has improved by leaps and bounds.
Matthew Savoie is the best defensive forward on the Bakersfield Condors. Which is saying something given he is 3rd in AHL rookie scoring

At practice today, Savoie admitted that he may have started slow this season, but has since really found his game and feels like he's taken a leap forward to be ready for the NHL. In 45 games this season in Bakersfield, Savoie has 37 points.

Hopefully Savoie is able to impress Oilers management with this tryout, and potentially save the team from making a major trade deadline acquisition - maybe, he can enter the lineup now and be a spark plug for the team's offence.
