Moments ago, news broke that veteran defenceman and former Oiler Tyson Barrie will be signing a professional tryout contract with the Calgary Flames.

The 33 year old Barrie was heavily connected to signing a tryout deal with the Edmonton Oilers in recent weeks. Despite signing the tryout offer with Calgary, Barrie is still free to sign a contract with any other team that shows interest. For now however, the Flames have a need on defence and will be able to give him a long look in preseason games.

Tyson Barrie played three season with the Edmonton Oilers from 2020 to 2023. He had decent success as a puck moving defenceman and fixture on the powerplay, notching more than 40 points in each season as an Oiler. His defensive game had some significant weaknesses though, and for the Oilers looking to go deep in the playoffs, he just wasn't a fit anymore.

After the Oilers traded Barrie to the Nashville Predators for Mattias Ekholm, Barrie's career took a clear downturn. He only appeared in 41 regular season games and was only dress for one playoff game. With the Oilers he could serve as a 7th defenceman for the regular season, but with the Calgary Flames, he may actually get regular playing time. Even if he signs with our biggest rivals, Oilers fans will still be wishing the best for a former fan favourite in what could be the final year of his career.
