The 23 year old Quebec native was selected by the Oilers in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft. This season, Rodrigue has skyrocketed his value and projections by becoming one of the top goalies in the AHL. Through 32 games this season, Rodrigue has an incredibly impressive 2.72 GAA and .915 save percentage.
Some of the details on Rodrigue's contract are a bit interesting as well. Only signing him for one year may be an indication that Rodrigue believes he could crack the NHL next season and earn a larger contract then. Also, it's a two-way contract, allowing the team to pass him through waivers if needed, which is another massive benefit of having him on the roster.
Calvin Pickard has proven himself this year to be a reliable backup goaltender, but if the Edmonton Oilers are looking to get younger and cheaper next season, Rodrigue is on the radar as ready to make the jump to the NHL. Earlier this season when both Campbell and Skinner were struggling, many fans and analysts thought Rodrigue to be the most talented goalie in the Oilers system - it's likely he does get playing time next season.
