Jarry was mentored by Schwartz on the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL, where Schwartz made his name before being hired by the Oilers.
The Penguins themselves announced the news that Jarry will be placed on waivers later today. The 29 year old goalie is in the second year of a five year contract for $5.375M annually.
Jarry has been absolutely horrendous for the Penguins this season, posting an .886 save percentage through 22 games. Last season wasn't particularly strong either, with a .903 in 51 games.
The Oilers weakest position is surely goaltending and they could use some additional insurance in the crease, but placing a claim on Jarry makes no sense.
Taking on his salary cap of $5.375M carries far too much risk, however, Oilers reporter Jason Gregor suggested other teams could be interested in a trade with 50% retained salary.
Tristan Jarry still does practice in the offseason with Oilers goalie coach Dustin Schwartz, as well as Stuart Skinner. There could be some confidence within the Oilers organization that Jarry could find his game again.
Of course, Dustin Schwartz has serious critics in Edmonton. Over the course of Schwartz's 10 years with the team, the Oilers goalies have often ranked near the bottom of the league - and Schwartz hasn't trained many elite goalies.
We'll see how the Oilers and the rest of the NHL responds tomorrow when Jarry's waivers News will finalize, but it seems trade is the most likely path forward.
