After winning the Stanley Cup as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, Kubel received a call by the Toronto Maple Leafs during his free agency. The call came from none other then Leafs Head Coach Sheldon Keefe, who made Kubel an offer, he was to sign with the Maple Leafs as a free agent Keefe would place Kubel on the Leafs 3rd line, as a promise.

However, things didn't work out the way Kubel was told after signing saying:

Two days after they signed me, they also signed Calle Jarnkrok, another right winger. He's a really good player. When I came to training camp, Jarnkrok was the one playing on the third line, he had the power play. I didn't get any shorthanded time, I played on the fourth line.

The Leafs also did Kubel dirty by placing him on waivers after just 6 games. Thankfully Kubel was claimed by the Washington Capitals.

Since joining his new team, Kubel has shined contributing on offence with 6 points in 19 games this season.
