NHL organizations take years To plan how to build and construct their teams to compete for the Stanley Cup. Sometimes the team is ready to make the steps now and go on a cup window that could result in a win.
Other organizations require a tear-down or retooling to put their team in a better position to compete long-term against the rest of the league.
Mario Tirabassi posted on Twitter that since 2009 only three players that were selected first or second overall in the NHL draft won the Stanley Cup.
Jack Eichel, the superstar centerman who was chosen second overall over McDavid was just awarded his first Stanley Cup in his career. The Vegas Golden Knights won their first cup in their history after defeating the Florida Panthers 9-3 to take them in five games.
As many NHL players say, the road to the Stanley Cup is the most gruelling and most fun any player could have and when they hoist that over their heads it feels like magic. I'm sure Connor McDavid is having a tough time watching Hoist The Cup before himself.
