Only 15 seconds into a penalty kill, Panthers defenceman Kevin Stenlund fired the puck over the glass from his own zone, but the referees thought he was in the neutral zone. Immediately every player on the ice called for a penalty, and the referees came together to meet, but they still got the call wrong. Stenlund shot the puck squarely from the Panthers side of the line.
Despite the broadcast replay, the coaches watching on the iPads, and the replay happening on the jumbotron, the referees still can't use video review to get the call right.
It was a rare occasion where Knoblauch seemed to lose his temper and really yell at a referee, and for good reason. The Oilers powerplay is their best weapon, and an extended 5 on 3 could change the outcome of the game.
With this issue coming up on such a large stage, perhaps this is something the league will address in the offseason. It's completely arbitrary which penalties and stoppages referees can review, when other penalties such as this can be of consequence too. Earlier in the game, the referees used video review to give Foegele a controversial ejection for a knee on knee collision.
Fans have been calling it out as a fundamental issue with the league, and a rule that needs to be changed immediately.
With the game still tied heading into the third period in a game of massive consequence in this series, the Oilers will have to muster up to score one more than the Panthers if they don't want this missed call coming back to haunt them.
