Prior to the game, the Oilers and the city of Edmonton hosted a watch party at the Moss Pit, the fan Plaza and Fan Park where many fans gathered to watch the fateful game. The city asked all fans to be respectful and safe while remaining in the arena and around the grounds.
It was noted that the Oilers Police Department had their riot police ready in case things got out of hand which has happened in past Stanley Cup finals elsewhere in the league.
It's a numbing experience to see the team play so well in their last three games and take the series to a game seven only to come up short and lose 2-1. The hope would certainly there as it felt that the team was close to tying the game. Unfortunately, the Panthers managed to close it out and lock in their first Stanley Cup in history.
Sportsnet interviewed tons of Oilers fans leaving the playoff watch party, and all fans spoke with incredible pride in the team's effort. While still stunned by the defeat, fans were happy for the ride, and they know the Oilers will be back next season.
Connor McDavid not accepting the MVP award after the game was over shows how the team is handling the loss and should hold their heads high as they have given this city and its fan base a great Stanley Cup run this year.
