His playing career began in 1983 when he was selected first overall by the Minnesota north stars. His NHL career lasted 10 years have had stops in New York, San Jose, Quebec City, Hartford and in Boston.
The 59-year-old former NHL executive has had a long-standing career with the NHL from being a player, players agent and into management when he was the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He also worked for Octagon which helped mixed martial arts fighters and the management of their well-being.
While his name is not a flashy name like Stan Bowman, Keith Gretzky, Lawton certainly possesses vast knowledge in terms of the NHL, how the game is played and how to manage a team. Over the years he has been a guest host on Sportsnet and other NHL media sources as he gives out his opinions and views on how teams are making their decisions.
Oilers president and interim general manager Jeff Jackson has made it clear that he has no desire to be the general manager full time, and he has mentioned that the new general manager will need experience and will be pegged to look after major contract extensions including Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard and eventually Connor McDavid.
It's been reported that Jackson is closing in on his decision and it should be revealed within the next 10 days or less but it's likely Lawton has been considered for this position and he may end up taking the job after all.
