In tonight's matchup between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets, the game got surprisingly heated. During the second period, Leafs defenceman Simon Benoit started playing the antagonist by chirping Blue Jackets rookie Adam Fantilli, which started the bad blood between teams.

Soon after this incident, Columbus veteran Erik Gudbranson understood his role and stepped into defend Fantilli. The two heavyweight defenceman squared off for a fight, and it begun with Benoit throwing a leaping punch at Gudbranson.

The rest of the fight didn't disappoint either, as the two tough guys went at each other with ferocity. Benoit held himself in the fight against the much larger Gudbranson, but took the worst punches in the fight, and ended up pinned to the ice.

It's a great display of old time hockey with two heavy hitting defenceman engaging in a tough fight, and also the older veteran stepping in to defend his team's rookie. It's the classic hockey code that all fans and players have come to love.
