Meredith Gaudreau will receive $1 million from insurance along with one year of Johnny's salary which would be $9.75 million as a part of the clauses in the collective bargaining agreement when a player passes away while still under contract. According to Puck Pedia, Gaudreau has earned an estimated 72.5 million in earnings in his career.
Gaudreau was entering his third year of his seven-year deal when he signed with the Blue Jackets and now with his passing, the contract has been removed from the roster and has thrown the teams cap situation into question as the team now has $25 million in cap space and is below the cap floor. General manager Don Waddell will need to seek out a contract or two to help bring his team to the cap floor so that they can be compliant on game one of the season.
This opens him up too many possibilities including a contract that a team may want to shed while acquiring a draft pick or two to make the deal complete or go out and sign a player to a deal.
No matter the case, this terrible situation continues to shock many including myself and we can only express our condolences to the Gaudreau family and stand our support through this difficult time.
