With most of the impact free agents locked up on new teams already, it seems like most teams are already finished and have their full lineup heading into the season. It seems like Vegas may be looking to make a splash ahead of the season, being linked to one of the biggest trade targets in the league.
It's true that the Knights are a team that will always spend to the cap limit, and this year were uncharacteristically boring in their moves. They have been constantly linked to Mitch Marner over the past month, and it seems that these talks never really died down.
Marner would be a massive add for the Knights, as they would look to revitalize his ability to compete in the playoffs. He's just the kind of players Vegas needs to push their offense back to the top and they seem to be getting aggressive on that.
The return to Toronto would most likely be Shea Theodore and a high pick or roster player. There would have to be third party salary retention involved to make the money match for Vegas, as they are currently stuck up against the cap.
Marner would completely revitalize the offense on Vegas on that top line, while Theodore would be an amazing fit for the Leafs new look defense core. If Treliving thinks their window is closing soon, they may also look to acquire a player to play now for them as well.
Treliving is no stranger to big player swaps, as he was the GM behind Calgary's Matthew Tkachuk trade. This would also theoretically be a win-win for the teams, although that move was a perfect example of what can go wrong when you try to make a massive splash. Marner to Vegas would make the league so much more interesting, but could also spell danger for the Oilers coming out of the Pacific in the playoffs.
