The Edmonton Oilers trade deadline plans will heavily rely on the injury status of Evander Kane, and according to new reports, they'll get confirmation on his status in nearly two weeks time.

Kane is currently recovering from a complex abdominal surgery completed in training camp, and another surgery for a lower body injury last month. Recently, Kane shared on social media that he's begun skating again.

NHL insider says Oilers will receive update on Evander Kane status in two weeks

According to a new update from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, it's still entirely possible that Kane will be able to return in the regular season.
The Oilers are expected to receive a more concrete timeline one week out from the March 7th trade deadline - in about two weeks time.
The more I talk to people around the league, it is not a certainty that Evander Kane doesn't come back before the playoffs. The Oilers truly do not have an idea or an answer yet, and may not get one until a week before the deadline as to whether or not they can spend that money.

Kane's return timeline will have major implications for the Oilers trade deadline. If he's ruled out until playoffs, the Oilers could spend his $5.125M in salary in trades.
However, if Kane returns earlier the Oilers would be right at the salary cap, and would need to clear cap space for trades.
Given the extremely complex nature of Kane's injuries and rehabs from multiple injuries, it's near impossible to currently predict when he could return - but still, before the playoffs seems to be unlikely.

Return of Evander Kane should take Oilers out of forward trade talks

When Evander Kane returns to the lineup, the Oilers will get a huge boost of a physical top 6 player - but will also have to take a quality player out of their current lineup.
The Oilers have been connected to several forwards in trades this season, but with Evander Kane returning, it's hard to see two players coming out of the current lineup. It may be Jeff Skinner, but there seems to be no attitude for trading him.
The news for Evander Kane's return will have a major impact on the Oilers cap situation heading into the trade, but also will seriously improve their lineup upon return. If he can get back up to speed, Kane can be a much needed physical presence and secondary scorer.
