Edmonton Oilers reporter Jason Gregor gave his take on the recent rumors that the Oilers may be looking for a goaltender upgrade and is targeting Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson feeling that he may not be an upgrade after all.

Several pundits and Oilers fans have voiced their concerns that the Oilers may need another goaltender to help put them over the top if they're wanting to go all the way to the end to winning their next Stanley Cup as doubt has been swirling around starting goaltender Stuart Skinner.

Gregor feels John Gibson isn't the goalie for the Oilers

The rumors surrounding John Gibson have been growing over the past couple of weeks as news revealed that he is willing to waive his no movement clause to come to the Oilers as he feels they are a contender for the Stanley Cup.
This season has been a strong stat line for Gibson considering how poorly the Ducks have played where he's had 2.69 goals against with a save percentage of .915.
Gregor had Kevin Woodley who is the goaltender expert and both men discussed the idea of Gibson becoming an oiler and whether it was a good idea or not.
«He's having a really good year this year. Let's put an emphasis point on that. His numbers, on the season as a whole, are slightly better than anything that's going on with the Oilers right now. Both him and Dostal (the other ANA goalie) are both top 20 in the NHL in adjusted numbers right now.

«And yet the caveat I would have, is that even within the good, there are some things that have plagued him statistically that continue to plague him. One is low slot line play, which is pucks across the middle of the ice below the hash marks. And that's a statistic that for the last number of years, he is very underwater on - like, significantly. It's actually one of his biggest negative assets. And even in a great season, that number remains problematic. - Kevin Woodley

Bowman likely to look at goaltending for upgrades

The Oilers would certainly need the Ducks to retain 50% of Gibson's salary in order to make a deal make sense as the Oilers are currently right up against the salary cap.
The team has uncertainty around Evander Kane's long term injury reserve as the team currently does not have enough salary cap space to make a deal work straight up.
As for Gibson's ability, it's safe to say that if Gibson was given the opportunity on a team that was far better defensively and the fact he does not have to work as hard as he does in Anaheim would give the Oilers a huge advantage even if some of his numbers are not the best.
Gregor feels he is not an upgrade but many across the league think otherwise and it remains to be seen on whether the Oilers can make a deal happen or settled for what they have and go into the playoffs with Skinner and Pickard as their tandem.
